If I went into this opinion based solely off of the beginning of this book, I would have put it down. I was close to, honestly. But I wanted to try and stick to it in hopes that it would stand up to how much I enjoyed most of her other stories. Overall, I am happy I did. The concept of this book was amazing, and straight up my alley yet left me with so many questions and things I want explained (and hopefully I can get at least some of those answers in the sequel.
I’m happy I generally enjoy all of the characters that Ana Huang has created this far. Farrah and Blake seemed like a great opposites attract, and some of the other couples in the story were so fitting and perfect. Part of it makes me curious as to why all of her characters are well off, if everything is written based off of the sole 1% of wealthy people in the States. It’s nice to read just very not relatable (and sometimes I like that).
I mentioned thinking the beginning of the book was rough, and I stand by that off of the sheer unironic use of the word ‘ain’t’ in narration. Never would I ever expect to pick up on something like that, let alone be upset by it. It just didn’t seem to fit Farrah’s vocabulary nicely. Or how she developed a more vulgar vocabulary as the novel progressed. But other than that she seemed a very basic character, pretty equal to the girls in the Twisted or King of Sins series. I’m just happy that the writing got better as the book went on, her writing is one of the main reasons I love her books.
Blake on the other hand? I loved how middle class he was. Especially in comparison to some of the other male suitors (Rhys? Dante? No comparison). But he’s also where I left a lot of my questions. He seemed pretty one note a lot of the time. Lots of complaining about emotions but not visibly doing anything or in depth thinking about them. It would have been nice to see him more in his element like we did for Farrah, learning more if he talked to Cleo or Joy for more answers about the baby, or more stuff about the bar at least. It seems very mundane or maybe boring to some but I think it would have made me enjoy him even more.
I really did enjoy the love between Farrah and Blake, however. I thought it was so sweet and stereotypical but checked all the fluff boxes and even the concept of sort of breaking the fourth wall of mentioning wanting romance book romance yet being in one (and thinking otherwise). That to me was 10/10.
I rated this book like a 3.75 stars (although 4 on Goodreads) off of the many questions and some interesting writing. I hope that the rest of this series will be able to keep getting better as they go on. To be honest, I’m looking forward to getting this series out of the way before The Striker comes out as well. I just wish I could get sprayed edges on a kindle book. That is the one reason why I’m sad I chose to read this series on kindle but at the same time I’ve read all of her other books on kindle so it was hard to justify getting the series as a physical copy. Maybe when I have more bookshelf room (and money).
